Railway Map of Ireland

As previously promised, I intended to provide an updated online map of Ireland’s railways, which could evolve into one that covers all industrial heritage features.

The previous map of Ireland on this site were 1:300000 scale. I have now uploaded maps at 1:200000 scale (65 in total) plus inset maps of key locations. The main index page is http://www.industrialheritageireland.info/Gazetteer/index.html

The next step is to link to individual pages from each location on each map (this will be done over the next year). In parallel, I am re-scanning my ex copyright maps at greater detail, which will allow me to produce 1:100000 maps, at which point, I will add rivers/canals to the maps also. This will be my 2018 project with a deadline for completion of 31 December 2018.

Derry railway museum to reopen in 2018

Many years ago, the railway museum in Derry City, built on the site of the GNR(I) Foyle Road Station, was closed, apparently due to differences of opinion with Derry City Council.

The Derry Journal reports that the group that are taking over the building – “Destined” – have indicated that when the locomotive “Meenglas” is returned to the site in May 2018 (currently at the RPSI base in Whitehead, Co. Antrim), they would be open to the formation of a new Foyle Valley Railway Preservation Society.
