With the LUAS line along part of the trackbed of the Harcourt Street Line due to open in 12 months time, the Currach Press have timed Brian MacAongusa's publication reasonably well. The book starts with an engineering description of the line, interspersed with aspects of social history, a format that reads well. Chapters following on services, both regular and specials, the latter always a feature of railway operation, the Drumm battery trains, accidents on the line, a tale of attempted murder, details of the shortsighted closure, a commentary on the economic effects of closure on the Harcourt Street area and details of the LUAS line due to open in 2004. The book is well illustrated with photographs and diagrams and is well worth the asking price.
