This book is the complete story of the horrific railway disaster at Armagh in 1889 - at the time of its happening it was the worst in the world and it remains the worst railway accident in Ireland. The author, in covering the brief involved, goes into a lot of detail to set the scene for the events that happened, including describing the line and its setting and explaining the time interval system of train operation in use on the line. Details of the excursion train involved and the parties behind its organisation are explored followed by details of the operational decisions taken before the train had even departed that ultimately contributed to the accident taking place. The author is to be commended on his treatment of this incident, neatly setting out the facts and restricting the passing of judgement - perhaps made easier by the fact that this work was published over 80 years after the event.
