The approach to the station is over a long left-hand curve. The former narrow gauge line to Larne trailed in on the Up side and ran parallel to the mainline. Before the station, the line crosses over the River Braid. There is a long siding, trailing into the loop on the Down
side. There are both Up and Down platforms here, with a water tank at the Belfast end of that on the Up side and another at the Derry end of the Down platform. A subway connects the two. The station building is on the Down side, the disused signal cabin, closed in 1994,
is at the Derry end of the station on the Up side. The signalling relay room is behind this. There is a waiting room on the Down Platform
Ballymena was the base for narrow gauge trains to Larne and Retreat, the narrow gauge section of the station being on the Up side. A car park now occupies the site of the narrow gauge line and the former locomotive shed and yard. The latter was interesting in that it had
2 roads for narrow gauge and 2 for standard gauge. There was previously a carriage and wagon works on the Up side here, a water tower rising above this.
