Site Description
There are both Up and Down platforms here, with that on the Up side an island. This previously served both the Up and Down running lines, with the Down platform being served by a loop. However, the layout was altered in 1986 to that that pertains today, the Up side of
the island platform being disused. The signal cabin closed concurrently. A subway connects the two platforms. There is ramp access to the Up platform which partially occupies the site of the former loop.
The original mainline to Derry, via Monkstown, trailed in on the Down side at the Belfast end of the station. This remained in use for Larne - Derry trains until 1961 and closed completely in 1963. A section of the 'Back Line' (as the former mainline became known after
the "Bleach Green Junction to Monkstown line opened in 1934) was redeveloped as a Civil Engineers siding for the storage of concrete sleepers in 1978. A further section was lifted in 1986 and reused in the Foyle Valley Railway. The connection to the former was removed in 2006.
The former stationmaster's house is on the Down side, as is the modern ticket office. There is an emergency crossover here. There is a park and ride site on the Down side. Beyond the station, there is an obelisk on the hill on the Down side. This is the Co. Antrim War memorial.
