Site Description

Approaching the station, a facing siding diverged on the Down side to serve a gasworks. This crossed the Blackstaff river by a bridge. The station, which opened in 1976 to replace Great Victoria Street and Queens Quay Stations, was built on the site of the GNR(I)'s Maysfield cattle depot, which had opened in 1914. There are four platforms here, made up of two islands, each connected to the building proper by a walkway. There is a staff level crossing at the Bangor end of the station, to allow for easier access between the two islands. There is a facing siding on the Up side at the Central Junction end of the station that terminates beside the parcels depot at the Bangor end of the station. Central Signal Control is in the building. There is a trailing siding on this side as well. NIR's head office is also located in the station building, which is above the line at the Bangor end of the station. On the concourse there is a ticket office, cafeteria, shop, bar, bank ATM, toilets and information centre. There is a plaque commemorating the war dead of the GNR(I), a separate one for those of the B&CDR, one commemorating the Boyne Viaduct in Drogheda and one commemorating the re-opening of the Belfast Central Railway by Sir Myles Humphreys, then Chairman of NIR and Lord Mayor of Belfast, in 1976. Beyond the station on the Up side, one of the landmarks of Belfast, the Harland & Wolff gantries can be seen on the Up side. These are passed at Titanic Quarter station.
