The railway reached Carlow Town on 4th August 1846 as the Great Southern and Western Railway opened their line from Kingsbridge Station in Dublin to Carlow. The line from Cherryville Junction to Carlow was actually a branch off the intended mainline to Cork, but
opened before the mainline did.
The station building, complete with canopy is on the Up platform, affixed to which is a plaque in honour of William Dargan. This is served by a loop, with the Down platform being served by the running line. An attractive covered footbridge connects the two. There is also
a loading bank and former goods store on the Up side at the Kildare end of the station. There is a siding and a disused cattle bank behind the Down platform. This area also contained a cement terminal and previously had a wagon turntable. The signal cabin was at the
Kildare end of the Down platform.
The Carlow Brewing Company was based in the old goods store at the station for a number of years from 1998.
