Site Description
The station building, which is an impressive structure, acts as both a bus and train station and contains ticket offices for both. The station building was refurbished in 2006/7 with a waiting area in the building, which is on the Down platform. This is served by the running
line. The Up platform is served by a loop. There is a water column on the Down platform. The former goods area is on the Up side at the station and previously contained a goods store, two sidings, gantry crane and a cement terminal. The former loco shed, now in use as
a bus depot is at the Limerick end of the Down platform, near to the signal cabin. Between this and the station building, there was a turntable. Until 1979, there was a second cabin, Ennis North which was on the Claremorris side of the road overbridge.
Ennis was the terminus for the West Clare Railway until this narrow gauge line closed in 1961. The narrow gauge trains used the other side of the Down platform, serving which was a terminal line. This passed under a separate road overbridge at the Claremorris end of the
station which has since been filled in, except for a section in use as a staff walkway. The narrow gauge yard was beyond the road overbridge at the Claremorris end of the station. The line ran parallel to the main line for 1¼ miles. For many years, West Clare Railway Loco
No. 5C was on a plinth in the adjacent Percy French Park and later adjacent to the Down platform. This has since been refurbished and is in operation at Moyasta in south County Clare.
