Site Description
The station building, complete with platform canopy, is on the Up side at this two platformed station and is a fine example of railway architecture, particularly when viewed from the station approach road. Wrought into the canopy are the initials "GNRI". The station building contains a ticket office, a waiting room and offices. Beyond this is the former stationmaster's house, now privately owned. There is the remains of a water tower on the Up platform on the Dublin Connolly side of the road overbridge which crosses this station and a footbridge connecting the two platforms on the Belfast side of the bridge. The signal interlocking and radio aerial are on the same side at the Belfast end of the station, before which is the former goods area, now a carpark. The remains of a loading bank exist here. On the Down platform, there is a waiting shelter and a disabled access entrance, which was originally the private entrance for Lord Talbot de Malahide and his family. The disused signal cabin is on the Down side at the Belfast end of the station, beyond which, the line crosses the Broadmeadow or Malahide Estuary by a causeway, the spoil for which was extracted from the quarry before the station. There is a marina on the seaward side of the line and beyond this, Lambay Island can be seen in the distance. There are intermittent views of the sea from here to Laytown. Although not visible from the line, there is an attractive road underbridge at the north end of the station.Photographs
