Site Description
Level crossing. The crossing here is infamous due to the high level of road vehicles striking the crossing gates at this busy road junction. The crossing closure sequence is integrated with the traffic lights at the road junction. South of the crossing is the former Merrion
station, closed in 1934. The platforms were removed in 1982 as part of the DART installation but the red brick station building remains in private ownership on the Up side. There is an emergency control point for the crossing in a building on the Down side. This replaced
the signal cabin, which was opposite.
From here south to Blackrock, the line runs on an embankment across the bay. Between here and Booterstown station, the portion of the bay cut off by the railway has become a bird sanctuary.
