The station building originally opened in the 1860s as a ferry terminal for L&NWR ferries and became a railway station in 1877 in conjunction with the opening of two separate sections of railway - that from Islandbridge Junction to Drumcondra Junction and from Church Road Junction.
Passenger services used the station until 1929.
The former railway hotel is adjacent to the station building. This is an attractive red brick building in its own right and has the letters"L&NWR" carved into the building frontage in a monogram.
