Site Description

Approaching the station, there was previously a long siding on the Up side, which trailed into the loop on the same side. The line from Tuam and Claremorris (since disconnected) also trailed into this. The turnout for this line was controversially removed in 2002, effectively severing this route from the rest of the network by turning it into a siding from Claremorris. The main station buildings are on the Down platform at this attractive station. At one stage, the Down platform carried a nameboard "Athenry & Ennis Junction", its counterpart on the Up side carrying one bearing the title "Athenry & Tuam Junction". There is a water tower at the Galway end of the Down platform, at the end of which is the disused signal cabin. Immediately beyond this is a level crossing. There are further buildings on the Up platform, at the Mullingar end of which is a water column. Outside, on the same side can be seen the former railway hotel. The disused and roofless goods store and site of a siding are at the Galway end of the Up platform. The goods area was on the Down side, after the level crossing and contained two cement silos and a siding. The latter remains as a headshunt off the line from Limerick. The area is now occupied by a carpark. Opposite, there is a disused loading bank, previously served by a siding. The line to Ennis and Limerick diverges on the Down side beyond this. Between the branch and the mainline, there was previously a turntable. An incident recorded in the Minute Book of the Midland Great Western Railway - Minute of 3 December 1873 indicates the disciplinary standards of the day: ''The lamp boy at Athenry being detected in giving oil to a W&LR fireman, both the boy and his father (employed as a porter at the station) be dismissed.''
