Site Description

On the approach to the station, the line to Tralee diverges on the Up side. Killarney has to be a prime example of the effects of the laissez faire attitude taken by the United Kingdom Parliament to all commercial matters, railway development included. The line as far as here was built by a stand alone company, without any forward planning as to a possible extension westward, with the branch to Tralee being added as an afterthought, hence the requirement that all Tralee bound trains serving the station must enter it, reverse back into a headshunt on the Up side, before proceeding on their way to Tralee. Trains going in the opposite direction run straight into the headshunt and reverse back into the station. The signal cabin here, bearing a nameboard facing to the track, is on the Down side at the Mallow end of the station. There are two platforms here, both terminal. The station building is beside this, outside of which is Killarney Great Southern Hotel, once railway owned. A fine nameboard bearing the name "CILL ÁIRNE" is on the wall of the station. There is a run round loop on the Up side of platform 1. An overall roof covers part of this and the main platform. There is a water tower beside the bay line. The former goods area, which contained 5 sidings, a store and a loading bank was between this and the line to Tralee. It was closed in 1996 and subsequently redeveloped as a retail complex, a car park occupying most of the site. The former Killarney Check platform is on the Up side, beside the line
