Site Description
The modern ticket office is on the Up platform, beyond which is the car park. The former station building is on the Down side at the Cork end of the station. This two platformed station closed in 1976 and reopened in 2001. There was a goods store and cattle bank on the Down side. There was previously a loading bank and siding on the Up side at the Dublin end of the station. The line crosses the Barrow line of the Grand Canal, the River Barrow and the officially dry Mountmellick branch of the Grand Canal after leaving the station. Monasterevan was once a centre of industrial activity, the evidence remaining to be seen on the Down side beyond the station, including a drawbridge over the Grand Canal and beside this, an aqueduct carrying the canal across the River Barrow. The line itself is carried over this by means of a viaduct.Photographs
