Site Description
Approaching the station, there is a long siding on the Up side which trails into the loop on the Up side. This then serves the Up island platform which was connected to the Down platform by a footbridge. The latter remains but gated and locked. The outer face of the
island platform is also fenced off and out of use. The former goods store on the Down side now houses the ticket office. One of the alcoves of this contains the Kilkenny World War I and World War II memorial.
The station was previously a through station on the line from Portlaoise to Waterford via Abbeyleix with Up and Down through platforms. The line between here and Portlaoise closed in 1962, making Kilkenny a terminal station in the process. This also had the negative
effect of making all trains serving the station reverse here. The disused and derelict original station building is beyond the buffer stops on the Down side, over part of which, there is a canopy. There is a pedestrian walkway connecting the platforms behid the buffer stops.
The former freight area on the Up side has been incorporated into the McDonagh Junction shopping centre with the former goods store adaptively reused. The disused signal cabin is at the Waterford end of the Down platform, behind which there is a siding.
