Site Description
Signal interlocking - BY. A relic from a bygone era, Ballybrophy is a junction station with the branch from Limerick via Nenagh trailing in on the Up side. Access to the branch is via a trailing siding from the Up line, use of which requires reversal. The station buildings are on the Up platform. The supports for the former signal cabin can still be seen on the Down, island platform. There is a water column on this platform, which is served by the running line as well as by a loop which runs behind it. The circular water tank is outside the station on the Up side, adjacent to which is the appropriately named "Signal Box" pub. The branch section of the station contains a run round controlled by a ground frame. The former loco area was on the Up side between the mainline and the branch at the Dublin end of the station. All that remains of this is the disconnected turntable. The former goods area, comprising a siding and disused loading bank is on the same side at the Cork end of the station. The signal interlocking and radio aerial are at the end of this. Opposite, there is another disused loading bank. This was served by a siding off the Down loop.Photographs
