Site Description
Approaching the station, there is a disused loading bank and site of sidings on the Up side. There are Up and Down platforms here, with the main station building on two levels on the Down platform. There is a further building that acts as a waiting room on the Up platform.
The two platforms are connected to each other by a footbridge at the Cork end of the platforms.
There is a loop on the Down side at the Cork end of the station. This was previously part of the line to Kilkenny which diverged on the Down side until closure in 1962. Access to this is controlled by a ground frame. There is a trailing siding off this which leads to a short
south facing bay behind the Down platform, access to which is controlled by another ground frame. Opposite, on the Up side are the former goods store, loading bank with cattle pens and the signal interlocking and radio aerial.
A section of the line remained is officially in use for 23/4 miles as far as Coolnamona, however, in practice, that beyond the Avonmore Co-op Factory near the former Conniberry Junction (formerly a trailing junction for the Mountmellick branch) would not be used and the line
has been severed. There is also a goods area with loading bank and Irish Rail's principal Permanent Way depot on this side after the junction. This latter area contains a factory for the manufacture of concrete sleepers.
