Site Description
There are four platforms here, comprised of an island platform 1 & 2 and Up side platform 3, with platform no. 4 a bay behind this. Before the merger of the WL&WR with the GS&WR in 1901, Platform 4 was the GS&WR line and was not connected to Platforms 1 -3, being
WL&WR property. To physically get from one to the other, a train would have to use the Direct Curve and proceed to Careys Road and return hence to Limerick Check.
There is a crossover between platforms 2 & 3, enabling trains on one line to use the other track as a run round loop. There is a siding on the Down side, adjacent to platform 1. There is an overall roof over the station. In the station building, located behind the buffer stops,
there are separate bus and train ticket offices and the usual terminal retail units. The station was renovated in 1996 and there is a plaque to commemorate this on the concourse. Outside the station, there is a plaque to commemorate the renaming of the station to
Limerick Colbert in 1966. The suffix is rarely, if ever used.
On the Down side, there was a container terminal which contained a goods store, loading bank, gantry and a number of loop sidings. The Markets tramway, opened in 1863, diverged on the Down side from this area. Closed in sections, the final part of this line was closed in 1961. Until 1975, a direct curve connecting the Foynes branch to the station, diverged on the Up side. The signal cabin is at the Rosslare end of platform 1 & 2. On the Up side of the station is a bus station and depot.
