Site Description
Block post and signal interlocking - ND. The line to Navan diverges on the Down side approaching the station. The ETS for this is entitled "Drogheda for Platin/Navan." Between this and the mainline is the goods area, the former goods store remaining. Opened in 1853, there are three platforms at the station, no. 1 on the Down side and no's. 2 & 3 on the Up. The station building, which was renovated in 1996, is on the Down platform and contains a ticket office, shop, public phone, toilets, platform post box and a waiting area. There is a canopy on both platforms 1 & 2. There is a water tower behind the Down platform, bearing the makers name, GRENDON, a local engineering and locomotive building firm, with a separate water column at the Belfast end of the platform, beyond which are three sidings and two loading banks. There is a turntable at the north end of the station on the Up side, as are a loading bank and a number of sidings. The former loco shed is at the same side/end, and was latterly used for wagon repairs. The signal interlocking and modern signal cabin, the latter bearing its name, are on the Down side at the Dublin end of station. There is a footbridge connecting the two platforms, at either end of which is a lift for mobility impaired passengers. On the Up platform, there is a small waiting room. There are the remains of platforms along the Navan branch which were used for cattle loading until that traffic ceased. There was previously a 'Third road' between the platforms, in reality a crossover, but this was removed to allow the existing platforms to be realigned to an easier curve.Photographs
