Site Description
Block post and fringe box to CTC - signal prefix DD. Opened in 1893 to replace the original D&BJR station, there is an island platform, previously with a south facing bay on each side here. However, that on the Down side has been filled in. There is a water tank on the Up
side. The platform is connected to the station building proper, which is on the Up side above the line, by a walkway which crosses over the Up line. There is a lift to the platform for mobility impaired passengers. Outside the station building, there is a car park.
There are many rooms in the building on the platform, one of which has been transformed into a railway photo museum. On the Up side there were sidings which served the HARP brewery, the building of which itself can be seen above the line adjacent to the station and
is now the Great Northern Distillery. The site of these is now occupied by another car park, access to which can be obtained by an access road to the Ardee Road, passing along side the station building and railway en route. This is an excellent example of positive
interaction between heritage preservation and development.
The former Dundalk Central Cabin, which was at the junction of the same name, is now preserved on the platform. Leaving the station, Dundalk North signal cabin is on the Down side. There are sidings on the Down side of the line here. North of Dundalk, the line passes
along a series of embankments and through a series of cuttings.
