Site Description
Approaching the station, Clare Lake can be seen on the Down side. The former line from Athenry and Tuam trails in on the Down side before the station and runs into platform 3, joining the mainline north of the station. There are 4 platforms in total but No.4 (the former Ballinrobe branch platform) is derelict. This branch trailed in on the Down side, beyond the Limerick line, until closed in 1959. A section of it remains in use for 2 sidings. There is a water tower beside this.
The main station buildings are on the Up platform (No.1) and the disused signal cabin, which replaced no less than three separate cabins & two ground frames in 1941, is at the Westport end on the Down side. The disconnected goods area is on the Up side at the same
end. The former goods store is in this area as well.
Beyond the station, the ‘Burma Road’, closed since 1975, continued straight ahead, while the line to Westport veers off to the left. The former is largely in situ, but the track immediately adjacent to the junction has been lifted.
