Site Description
Approaching the station, there is a disused cattle bank and site of a siding on the Up side. The main station building is on the Up platform here. There is also a Down platform, on which is the former signal cabin and a waiting shelter. A footbridge at the Athlone end of the station connects the platforms. Beyond the station, both platform lines continue as two sidings with a trailing siding off the Down siding. The disused two road loco shed - beyond which was a turntable - and the freight area, the latter doing a good traffic in timber, are on the same side at the west end of the station. The former goods store is at the Westport Quay end of the station on the Up side, after which the line to Achill, closed in 1937, diverged on the same side. The first overbridge on this remains over the approach road to the station from the town. The trackbed east of the bridge has been redeveloped as a walkway. The mainline previously continued on to Westport Quay at MP 1623/4, where there were passenger and goods platforms, the line continuing onto the quay itself. There was also a siding to Rank's store. The bulk of this extension, beyond MP 1611/2 was questionably lifted in 1977 and has since been redeveloped as a walkway, but not connected to that on the former Achill branch.Photographs
