Site Description

Approaching the station, there was a trailing siding on the Up side, which served a ballast depot and was previously the goods depot. There was previously a goods store here, with a through siding and a loading bank either side of it. This was demolished in 2007. The siding was removed in October 2005. The house on the Up side at the back of the former ballast depot was for the MGWR district engineer. There are both Up and Down platforms at the station, with the station buildings and former signal cabin on the former. There is a waiting shelter on the Down platform. At the Westport end of the station, there is a 4 barrier CCTV controlled crossing, beyond which on the Down side is a water tower. There was formerly a loco shed and turntable at the Athlone end of the station on the Down side, no trace of which remains.
