Site Description
Approaching the station, there was previously a long siding on the Up side that trailed into a loop on the same side. This was removed in 2007 as part of the Mayo Line re-signaling, which also allowed the mainline to be routed to the Up platform and creation of a longer loop on the Down side. The former stationmaster's house remains behind the Down platform at the Athlone end of the station. The station building is on the Up platform and there is a footbridge connecting this to the Down platform, on which there is a waiting room. At the Westport end of the Down platofrm is the former signal cabin, notable for its height, bearing a nameboard stating "ROSCOMMON SIGNAL CABIN". There is a 4 barrier CCTV controlled level crossing at the Westport end of the station and a water tower and another cattle bank after the crossing. The crossing is monitored from Athlone Level Crossing Control Centre. The former goods area is behind the Up platform. There is a a siding running into this at the Athlone end of the station. This area contains the former goods store and also had a cattle bank. There were previously sidings on the Down side as well.Photographs
