Site Description
Approaching the station, the line from Limerick to Waterford crosses the line on the level - the only remaining example of a square or flat crossing on the island. The line from Limerick trails in at the back of the station. The former Limerick Junction North cabin is on the
Up side between the square crossing and the station proper. There are three platforms at this station - an Up island platform which serves the Cork line on one side and a terminal bay on the other, for Limerick to Waterford trains as well as the Down platform, which is a
more recent addition. A footbridge connects the two platforms.
Until 2007, there were four platforms at this infamous junction, infamy due to the fact that until 1967, all trains using it had to reverse to gain access to the platforms! Waterford bound trains ran into the station area, past the back of the station on a loop, on which there was
a footbridge and level crossing and reversed into a south facing bay - the Waterford Bay. Limerick bound trains ran past the station on their own line and reversed back into the north facing bay.
The signal interlocking is on the Up side. The main platform, which was 1598 feet in length, was divided in two, serving both Up and Down Cork line trains. It was shortened and converted to a single platfom in 2007. The station building, which contains a ticket office and
waiting room is on this. Part of the station building was in use as a railway owned hotel until 1927. On the Down side of the Cork line is the former locomotive shed, now roofless but in use as a wagon repair shop. There is also a track machine depot here. There are a
water column and a water tower on this side as well, the latter just before the disused Limerick Junction South cabin.
