Site Description

Approaching the station, there is ballast loading area on the Up side. Opposite there was a separate coal siding trailing to the mainline. There are three platforms at this station, although the bay on the Up side would not normally be used as it can only be accessed by reversal. Access to it is controlled by a four-lever ground frame. The former loco area, which contained a turntable and a water tower, the latter remaining, is behind this. The former loco shed is now in use as a bus depot. The station building is on the Up platform. There is a loop on the Down side at the Cork end of the station, at the southern end of which is the signal interlocking and radio aerial. This gives access to the former goods area which contained a store, loading bank and water tower. There was previously a gas works on the same side between the platforms and the goods area. There were originally two signal boxes here, Thurles North and South, neither of which remain. The signal cabin here was demolished in 1991. The rubble from same was used to fill in the turntable pit - the latter having been transferred to Blennerville for the tourist railway there. Thurles Station had its 15 minutes of fame in the fight for Irish freedom. William Smith O'Brien, who was wanted by the police for his part in the failed 1848 rebellion, was identified by one William Hulme - a guard in the employ of the L&NWR who was on secondment to the GS&WR to assist in training in Irish staff. It is rumoured that he resigned upon receiving his reward and returned to England whereupon he purchased a pub and became his own best customer, dying of alcohol related illness.
