Site Description

Approaching the station, which is at the foot of Mount Misery, Waterford Central Cabin can be seen. It is of an unusual design, located over the line and at right angles to it. The signal interlocking for the Waterford area is on the Up side near this. The line from here to just beyond the Barrow Bridge is controlled from the West cabin, which also contains the ETS for the next section. This is entitled "Waterford (Central) for Barrow Bridge/Wellington Bridge", trains running as far as the Barrow Bridge not requiring the staff. The station buildings are on the same side. There is a plaque to commemorate the naming of the station in honour of Irish patriot Joseph Plunkett in 1966. The suffix is rarely used. Due to the closure of the South Wexford line, all trains use the bay platform No. 5 with the through platform fenced off and out of use. This latter is 1210 feet in length and is numbered 3 and 4. There was previously a crossover along the length of the loop to allow two trains to use the platform simultaneously. Opposite platform 5 is the disused platform 6. There are canopies over both sets of platforms. Platforms 1 & 2, which were east facing bays at the Rosslare end of the station, have been filled in for a car park. The platform awning of no. 2 can still be discerned. Platforms 7 & 8 which were at the Limerick end of the station on the Up side, were removed to accommodate the transfer of CIE's bus station from south of the River Suir to the railway station. The bus station was relocated south of the river in 2000.
