Approaching the station, the line runs through a rock cutting before crossing a five arch viaduct, after which the station is entered. There are both Up and Down platforms here, with the running line serving that on the Up side, on which is the station building and disused
DW&WR style cabin, as well as the former railway hotel. The Down platform is served by a loop.
The original footbridge at the station was provided by Messrs Courtney & Stephen at a cost of 48. It collapsed in an overcrowding incident in 1873. It's replacement of 1876 is still standing today.
The goods store behind the Down platform is now privately owned. There is a water tower at the Rosslare end on the same side. Opposite, "Wood siding" diverges. From Rathdrum to Shelton Abbey, the line runs through the Vale of Avoca, one of the most scenically
attractive sections of the line.
