Taken from the road overbridge east of the station (Straffan Road), the train approaching is a Sligo bound service. The line between Clonsilla and Maynooth is still single track. The crossover in the foreground gives access to the Down or slow loop. There is a trailing siding connecting into the loop. Also visible on this siding are catch points. These allow a train to be left in the siding without motive power acting as a brake. If such a train were to roll back towards the loop, it would derail.
