The railway line to Tralee from Mallow was built as two separate projects. However, when building the section from Killarney to Tralee, the line started some 0.25 miles east of the station with the result that Tralee bound trains have to enter the station and then reverse out before continuing onto Tralee. Dublin/Cork bound trains must do the reverse and overshoot the station before reversing back in.
