In the days of wooden sleepers, the standard method of preserving the wood, thereby increasing the life of each sleeper, was by creosoting them. This is a process that involved injecting creosote into each sleeper under high pressure which then acted as a preservative. The MGWR creosoting plant was located at Liffey Junction. The siding here connected the plant to the mainline.
