Aughinish Alumina pays €1,952 corporation tax on sales of more than €191 million

Sunday, June 16th, 2013

For all those who are taking shots at the Republic of Ireland and branding this country as benefiting from our low Corporation tax rate, explain how transfer pricing benefits the Republic of Ireland in this case.

H/T to Brian Goggin of irishwaterwayshistory.com for this link - an objective analysis of the cost of sheep farming.

Over half of young people would not date a person with epilepsy

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

The irish Independent reports on a survey carried out by the European Forum on Epilepsy Research confirms what I have long experience of - potential partners walking away from me because of my medical history.

Like nuclear power, fracking is safe - really!

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

I link to this story on the BBC website which has been generally suppressed by the MSM. Coming to the island of Ireland soon.

Iveagh House

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

I finally made it into Iveagh House - former townhouse of the Guinness brewer heir. The event was European Literature Night and whilst - for the organisers - the purpose of the night was the literature, for me, the purpose of the night was to see inside Iveagh House.

The innocence of youth

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

Oh to be young, carefree and naive. I could go around thinking that the world was perfect and every decision taken by those in authority was based on solid evidence and free of bias.

I was at an exhibition organised by DIT photography students this evening about Grangegorman - the former mental institution which is to be redeveloped as the DIT campus. In the exhibition brochure, they gave the results of a survey of DIT students on a number of issues in connection with the planned move to Grangegorman and one of the questions was:

Does it concern you that historical buildings have been and will be demolished in order to begin construction of the large campus?

One of the responses to this question was:

"Not particularly. Things have to move on and progress, if the buildings are not listed, then they are not that significant".

Oh to be young and innocent.

He tells truth

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

I have enormous respect for Brian Goggin - of irishwaterwayshistory.com. In a recent post on his site about the Ulster Canal (he and I are both opposed to the "restoration" of the Ulster Canal) Brian responded to a poster who supported the development as an economic stimulus thus:

Small farming in Ireland is doomed, as is any part of the non-urban economy that depends on it; folk in remote rural areas have three options: come up with some high-value legal economic activity that can be carried out there, move to a city or accept a lower standard of living.

Hear hear. I couldn't have put it better myself.

A lesson in data storage

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

In this digital era, I take digital photographs. The upside is that you can take as many photos as you like as each has a marginal cost of close to zero. The downside is storage.

I keep two copies of all photos - one on CD and another on an external drive. As some of my early CDs are 10 years old (or more), I decided to institute a checking regime. So far I have had 4 failures out of 16. For me, there is no overall issue or data loss as I have the external hard drive also - however, for someone who thought that their photos would be secure on a CDR - you have been warned.

I am continuing the process of CD checking and recreating new CDs for those that either fail on startup or where I have difficulty opening 1 or more images.

Waterford City - a modest proposal

Friday, March 29th, 2013

The satellite image above - courtesy of Google - is of the Suir Bridge in Waterford. This is the railway bridge and not either of the two road bridges. I read on Irish Railway News that the 2030 Rail Network Strategy Review Final Report contains the following proposal:
"Improve pedestrian/cycle connections into Waterford City Centre from a relocated Railway Station" (on page 127).

The problem with the current station in Waterford is that it is north of the river, whereas the city proper is south of the river. In addition, it is prone to flooding, being located immediately adjacent to the river. I would like to suggest the construction of a new junction in Waterford allowing trains from Dublin and Limerick to run directly onto the railway bridge in the above image (the trains from Dublin and Limerick come in from the north of the image and currently run straight to Waterford (south of the image). The curved spur line visible on the image allowed trains to run from Waterford to Cork via Dungarvan and Mallow. What I am proposing is a mirror of that spur.

By relocating the mainline station south of the bridge, it would allow for integration with the bus network in the city. In addition, the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway could continue with their current plans and have a connection into said station. The final piece of the jigsaw would be the proposal for the restoration of the New Ross line. This would free up the present Waterford Station for same.

Now if only the Germans would stop dictating our finances and start dictating our transport policy (something I would be happy to see happen!).

Oughterard, Co. Kildare

Saturday, March 2nd, 2013

The headline is correct. I was out at the graveyard where Arthur Guinness - he of the alcoholic drink - is buried. This with a walking group that I am a member of and I was leading the walk. On the return leg, one of the group had to stop and drop out as she had over estimated her ability to do the 11 mile walk at a fast pace. One of the other members agreed to stay with her and a third member stayed with the main group but drove back to where she was when we arrived back in Celbridge (where the walk had started from).

As this was the first event I had gone to with this group, I wore my "I've Had Part Of My Brain Removed" sweater. The lady who stayed with the girl who finished early asked me about it when they got back to the pub where we were meeting up afterwards (The Mucky Duck in Celbridge which is located on the site where Arthur Guinness was born1). I told her the story I featured on this site earlier this week. She listened and said 'that is very interesting. I also have epilepsy'. She continued 'the girl we went back for also has it and by the way, the guy who drove back to collect us works at identifying genes that may cause epilepsy'.

Moral of the story - I intend to wear this sweater more often. As a means of bringing to my attention others who suffer from this condition, it has worked a treat.

Notes:

1. Yes I am aware that we walked from where he is buried (dead) to where he came into the world which is backwards.
