I like!

Friday, April 19th, 2013

The BBC has reported on a proposal to build a ship tunnel in Norway. I would normally offer to slit my throat if the alternative was to go on an ocean cruise. The thought of being couped up on a floating prison and subject to the whims of the captain would not suit me. However, if it were to include something like this on the itinerary, I am sure I could be tempted!

Metro or archaeology

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Interesting dilemma but I think I come down on the side of those seeking the retention of the road in situ and adjustment of the metro plans.

Be careful what you drink

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

On my first visit to the US - to New York - in 2007, I was struck by the presence of large wooden water tanks on the roofs of most buildings - both commercial buildings and apartment blocks. Various news outlets - including RTE - have reporting on the finding of a dead body in such a water tank at a hotel in Los Angeles.

Camino del Rey, Spain

Saturday, January 19th, 2013

There is industrial heritage and there is industrial heritage. I think the Camino del Rey in Spain comes under the latter heading. This is a pathway completed in 1905 to allow workers at two hydro electric generation stations pass through the narrow gorges between Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls.

It is currently being restored as a tourist attraction. I'm tempted to say that it is on my list of things to do before I die, but the cynic in me says that it could be the last thing I do before I die!

Another day - another crime tunnel

Friday, January 18th, 2013

I hate having to associate tunnels with crime, but they seem to go hand in hand. This BBC News story is about a 45m long tunnel dug by thieves who used it to break into a bank vault in Berlin.

The Irish Independent has a photo gallery on the Best Tube Stations in Europe.

Below is a photo taken by yours truly in Berlin where they have quite a number of stations which are architectural gems. This is the exterior of Rathaus Schonenberg station.
