OBE for Sonia Rolt

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Whilst not of direct relevance to industrial heritage in Ireland, Mrs Sonia Rolt, the widow of L T C Rolt - author of the classic Green & Silver - has been awarded an OBE in the United Kingdom New Years Honours List, for services to Industrial Archaeology and to Heritage.

Green & Silver is an account of the Rolts' travel by water in Ireland, regarded as significant because their journey included the entire length of the Royal Canal shortly before the canal was closed to navigation.

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

The Irish Independent has reported that University of Ulster have discovered the remains of a 410-year-old fort on the banks of the River Foyle near Strabane. The remains include a brewhouse, which would have provided beer to the settlement downstream at Derry.

Herdmans Mill - Sion Mills

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

The BBC has reported that a building on the Herdman's Mill site in Sion Mills went on fire earlier today. Roisin Connolly of the Sion Mills Buildings Preservation Trust is quoted:

"The fire is focused on the front offices of the Mourne mill - the large industrial factories that were occupied between 1989 and 2004 when the last mill workers were paid off.

"It does not affect the old part of the mill which is B plus listed and is at the other end of the site.

"The building on fire is deserted at present, it is derelict."

If anyone has any photographs of the aftermath, I would be happy to add them to this site. Contact details here.

The Ulster Canal

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

I have namechecked Brian Goggin (he of irishwaterwayshistory.com fame and not the ex banker of the similar name!) many times on this site, simply because he writes high quality material for publication on the aforementioned website.

His latest post concerns the Ulster Canal. Thank you Brian for nailing this white elephant to the mast (if this is not a mixing of metaphors!).

Oughertard Cemetery, Co. Kildare

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Of what relevance to industrial heritage is this, I hear you ask? This small cemetery, tucked away at the end of a lane off a country road, is the burial place of one Arthur Guinness, he of the brewery fame. The Sunday Independent reported today that this quiet graveyard is becoming a "mecca" to Guinness tourists (their words).

To this end, I took them up on their suggestion and paid a visit today. Photos and details will follow shortly (now that I have my arrears of photo processing down from a year to a month!)

Cork Harbour Open Day 4th September 2010

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Whilst this event takes place an industrial setting, I make no claim for any event of IH interest - it may well be face painting and balloons!
