Great Southern Trail

Friday, December 28th, 2012

One of the many things on my to do list (growing in length all the time) is to compile a listing of those sections of railway trackbed which can be walked/cycled. One of the earliest community efforts in this regard was the Great Southern Trail who have been actively restoring the trackbed of the former North Kerry line (from Ballingrane in Limerick to Tralee in Co. Kerry).

Abbeyfeale Online reports on the installation of a new footbridge in Abbeyfeale to allow a further section of this excellent project to be brought into use.

I am all for adaptive re-use, but I'm not sure that this comes under that heading?

Abandoned mines have alternative uses

Monday, June 4th, 2012

Before CERN was around, there was an attempt (in the 1960s) to search for sub atomic particles in the USA, in an abandoned gold mine in Homestake Mine in South Dakota. This report, courtesy of the BBC, is on plans to recommence operations to search for dark matter in the mine's levels.

Odeon Restaurant closes (old Harcourt Street Station, Dublin)

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

It is with a certain sadness that I report the closure of the Odeon Restaurant, which was located in what was the main station building of the erstwhile Harcourt Street Station in Dublin 2. Having said that, on the many occasions that I had lunch there, I always found the service to be very slow which, when you are a private sector worker without access to flexitime, is a major drawback.

I hope that another business can be found to take over and operate this special building, restoring public access to same.

River Suir Railway Bridge, Waterford City

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

I passed through Waterford last weekend, updating my online descriptive narrative of the railways of Ireland. The forlorn former railway bridge over the Suir, upstream of the road bridge in the city but downstream of the new motorway bridge, stands there looking for a purpose, albeit with one of the spans removed to allow shipping to continue upstream to where?

Given the ability to automate, what would there be to stop (money aside) the restoration of this bridge as part of a walkway/cycleway for Waterford? With one lifting bridge already, why not two?

The Irish Times has reoprted that the former LMS station building on North Wall Quay is open from now until January 22nd as a Christmas Market. As opportunities to see this building would be few and far between otherwise, you have been advised.

What do you do with a redundant reservoir?

Friday, October 14th, 2011

The BBC has reported that Severn Trent water company have sold a number of properties no longer required, including disused reservoirs. The thought (or lack of) crossed my mind. What do you do with a redundant reservoir?
