The Gobbins Path

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

The BBC have reported on a proposal to restore the Gobbins Path in Antrim. The path was built by the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway at the start of the 20th Century as a means of encouraging passengers onto their railway line.

In a throw back to the past, Larne Borough Council will charge visitors to use the path. This is a retrograde step. One wonders will they accept euro, or would that only encourage the dirty fenians.

Guinness to move to Leixlip

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

It had to happen. Rumours have been circulating for quite a while about Guinness abandoning St James Gate. When you base your marketing strategy on history, leaving St. James Gate was going to be difficult and leaving Ireland even more so.

Cue the cunning plan. Guinness was first brewed in Leixlip, Co. Kildare (less than 5 miles away as the crow flies from yours truly) so, Diageo have hit upon the idea of moving to Leixlip. I'd reckon that Kildare County Council are having wet dreams at the thought of the rates income involved.

See RTE for details.
