24th January 2009

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

The railway and industrial heritage links pages have now been moved to WordPress format. I have used the opportunity to review all the links and remove those that are invalid (most of them unfortunately).

However, I came across an industrial heritage goldmine (metaphorically speaking) in this site. The site title would lead you to believe that there is nothing of IH interest therein. I have taken the liberty of deep linking to pages within the site as there is so much of IH interest that a separate entry for each relevant page is merited.

The process of moving to Wordpress continues. I have moved a number of the pages from the "Other" section to WordPress format. These are:

The "Other" index page has also been redeveloped in WordPress.

Movement of Canals section

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

The main index for the canals section has been moved to WordPress and now has a new look with image links for each of the relevant subsections. A number of these still link to the old html pages and I will be moving these to WordPress shortly.

Cllr. Michael O’Shea (Kerry)

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

The Irish Times reported on the refusal of Kerry Councillors to include the railway station at Castlemaine on the former line to Valentia on Kerry's Record of Protected Structures. Cllr Michael O Shea was quoted thus:
"This is privately owned. The community does not own it. The railway line is long gone. There is no right of way into it. The owner will not repair it because it is not worth repairing,"
I haven't checked what political affiliation he is but I assume Fianna Fail, the builder's friend.
As a comparison, I am from Dublin, I have no business in Kerry, therefore why I am paying taxes to pay social welfare in Kerry?

Sex smell lures ‘vampire’ lamprey to doom

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

The BBC has reported on an experiment in the USA to trick female lamprey into thinking a male awaits them in order to catch and destroy the parasitic creature.

Here in Ireland and specifically along the Boyne Navigation, lamprey are a protected species, so don't expect praise for trying something similar here - only a prosecution by an overpaid civil service jobsworth.

Whiskey made for Obama’s last day

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

RTE has reported that the Cooley Distillery in Co. Louth has produced a whiskey to commemorate the inauguration of Barack Obama as President of the USA. It will be presented to him when he leaves office, by which stage it will be deemed to have matured (the whiskey that is!).

Update 17th January 2009

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

I have started to add another feature to the site. When visiting New York in 2007, I was lucky to have had a guide in the form of the President of the Roebling Chapter of the US Society for Industrial Archaeology who, along with an archaeologist friend of hers, gave up their afternoon to show me around the IH of New York.
It struck me that there is no reference for the IH enthusiast to check if they wish to spend time in Dublin and focus on IH.
To this end, I have identified five walks alongside the railway network (H&S freaks relax - I am not proposing that anyone walks on the railway nor even trackside!) which bring to the attention of the interested observer some of the history of the lines and their features as well as any other IH feature encountered nearby.
To this end, I have moved the link to the Bond Bridge page off the main index and this is now accessed from the "Other" page. In its place, I have linked to the WordPress page for Dublin industrial heritage walks.

“Conservation” of Rooskey Bridge

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Another day - another threat to Ireland's industrial heritage and no one shouts stop.

The IWAI have reported that Rooskey Bridge is to be butchered to facilitate an increased flow of road traffic. One of the informed commentators on the subject declared:

I don't think widening the bridge by refacing with the original stone would in anyway damage it's heritage value, it would in fact give it structural conservation.

Sort of like Brian Boru's axe. The head has been replaced 20 times and the handle 18, but it is still Brian Boru's!

Canals

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

I have added two pages to the site.

1. Ulster Canal. Due to the need to put this information in the public domain, I have added a page concerning my objection to the "restoration" of the Ulster Canal.

2. I have moved the page for the Cong Canal to Wordpress and have started to upload the photographs into Coppermine. The old canals index page on the main site has had the Cong Canal link updated to reflect this.
