Passage West to Rochestown greenway to be established

Friday, July 31st, 2009

The Department of Transport have authorised expenditure on the creation of a walkway/cycleway on the former Cork Blackrock and Passage Railway trackbed from Passage West to Rochestown in Co. Cork.

As there is already a cycleway/walkway from Rochestown to Cork City via Blackrock along another section of the trackbed of this former line, and, I believe, another section from Carrigaline to Crosshaven, all that it would need is for the section from Passage West to Carrigaline to be so restored. Yes, I know it involves using a tunnel. Bikes are supposed to have lights.

Top Gear in the sewers

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

I don't watch much TV (in fact, I don't even own a TV). One of the few programmes I will watch if I happen to be in someone else's house and it is on is Top Gear. It is light entertainment at its best.

There is the potential for some Irish interest in a forthcoming edition. Belfast is currently having a new sewer system built and per the BBC, The Top Gear team are investigating the possibility of driving through the system in a parallel with the film the Italian Job.

ESB removes Ireland’s industrial heritage

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

The process of elimination of Ireland's industrial heritage continues apace. The Irish Independent has reported that the two remaining chimney stacks at ESB Shannonbridge are no more. Makes you wonder where are the IHAI in putting the case to authorities for preservation.

24th July 2009

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I have started to add material to the railway description section of the site. As I am reading various publications, I am extracting key points and adding these to the site. This is fairly time consuming, as it involves setting up a number of pages for each location. However, in the long run, as each location is added, this process should become easier as the base page will be there for each location. The relevant sections are RAILWAY LINES OF IRELAND (EXTANT), RAILWAY LINES OF IRELAND (FORMER) and PRESERVED/TOURIST RAILWAYS.

I have also tidied up a few other things and continued the process of transferring the remaining book reviews that are setup as posts to page status as being more stable.
