Call for help: save the oldest Vierendeel-bridge in Flanders

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

The Flemish Association for Industrial Archaeology is campaigning to save at least a part of the oldest Vierendeel Bridge in the World Heritage town Brugge, see the article in Flanders Today http://www.flanderstoday.eu/content/unique-bridge-destined-scrapheap
All the other Vierendeel-bridges were destroyed during two world wars - only this one survived till now.

Vierendeel (1852-1940) was a famous Belgian engineer (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Vierendeel) who invented the so-called Vierendeel truss. Such trusses do not have the usual trianglular voids seen in a pin–joint truss bridge, rather employing rectangular openings and rigid connections in the elements, which (unlike a conventional truss) must also resist substantial bending forces. Movable bridges of this type are very rare. Only one swing bridge of this type is known: the Scheepsdale bridge in Brugge.
The Vierendeel principle, a construction similar to a truss but with rigid joints, was used in the New York World Trade Center.

A photo report on the Scheepsdale Bridge can be found at: http://www.vvia.be/sites/lijst_WV/8000001.htm
A list of existing and disappeared bridges where the Vierendeel-principles were used is compiled at the website http://users.telenet.be/karel.roose/vierendeel/vierendeel.html

Please help us
and send a letter or a e-mail which pleads for saving at least a relevant part of this bridge

29th August 2009

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

I have started to build the new "Railways" index page in WordPress. The old html page will remain for a while yet, but gradually links off it will be to new WordPress pages with any new pages parallel linked off the new "Railways" index page in WordPress.

To kick start the process, I have established a new page in WordPress for the Railway Clearing House Junction Maps. I have also created a WordPress page for each Irish junction map as published by the RCH with a brief narrative setting out the history of each line featured on each map. About 50% of the junction maps are now online with the balance to follow.

History of Dun Laoghaire Harbour

Friday, August 28th, 2009

The Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company have published a concise history of their harbour and have also placed a pdf version of the book online for free download here.

There is one error I noticed in the work which states that the first train on the Dublin & Kingstown Railway ran on October 9th. Murray (Ireland's First Railway) records this as the first locomotive trip over the full line - however, public services did not commence until 17th December 1834. The history of the funicular railway from Dalkey Quarry to Dun Laoghaire also misses out a very significant aspect of this, fuller details of which can be read here.

Belfast misses out on funding for Titanic museum

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

The BBC has reported that Northern Ireland missed out on a potential grant of Stg£500,000 towards a museum with a dedicated section for the Titanic which instead went to Southampton - the reason being that no-one in Belfast bothered to apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Paul Mullan of the Heritage Lottery Fund was quoted thus in relation to Belfast missing out: "No-one has come to us to look for funding for a permanent museum in Belfast in relation to the Titanic"

Eyes on the ball in future please.

Archaeologists uncover early wheel on Dromod bypass

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

The Irish Times (26th August 2009) has reported that as part of the archaeological investigations in advance of building the Roosky-Dromod bypass, a network of trackways was uncovered and - more significantly - part of a large wheel which was dated to 1100 BC. The wheel would have been three part - 2 "C" sections and a rectangular "axle" in the centre - all joined together with dowels. The diameter of the wheel was c 1.5 metres.
