David McWilliams Quote - Sunday Business Post - 28th March 2010

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

In a ‘‘spectator democracy’’ like Ireland, mass compliance is achieved by ridiculing the dissenter - or, if necessary, ostracising the individual who suggests that the truth is being hijacked.

I know how he feels.

Print Museum Dublin

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

I visited this museum for the first time today and can vouch that it is worth a visit and worthy of support. Tours of the museum are hands on and allow visitors to undertake a basic printing exercise involving selecting a name (their own or their child for example) and picking the letters for this out of the case of letters, placing them in a pre-formatted press with one of two options to produce an individualised A4 poster. There is also an on site cafe which can be visited without paying to visit the museum.

Visit their website here.

Spelga Dam pipe burst

Friday, March 26th, 2010

The BBC has published a photo that has all the makings of becoming a classic. It shows a waterfall appearing out of nowhere in the Mourne Mountains as a result of a pipe carrying water from the Spelga Dam Reservoir to Fofanny Treatment works bursting. Researching the matter, it appears to date from 2008 - however, the BBC website unfortunately gives the impression that it is current.

Irish Industrial Heritage Wiki

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Whilst not the most public area of history/heritage, there is nonetheless a significant amount of information relating to the industrial heritage of the island of Ireland available.

Notwithstanding the reputation that is attached to Wikipedia, as a method of online publishing a range of information in a relatively flexible format with an ability to link profusely, both within the Wiki and externally, Wikis appear to have a lot going for them. To this end, I have started the process of building an Irish Industrial Heritage Wiki here on industrialheritageireland.info.

The Wiki is in the early days of creation and population and therefore the priority for my information adding is:

1. Relevant Google Alert information/Iris Oifiguil/newspaper reports
2. Information provided to me by third parties
3. Railways - Open
4. Railways - Closed
5. Canals
6. Other areas of industrial heritage

Currently the site is setup with only one user (me) and therefore any information can be emailed to me. It is my intention to allow users to register and add/amend over time.

The new section of the site can be accessed at http://www.industrialheritageireland.info/TikiWiki/

IH Reminiscences

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Established sources, be they newspapers, archives, photos, maps etc tell a significant part of the story of industrial heritage and in that regard, industrial heritage/industrial archaeology is more privileged than conventional archaeology in that being of more recent times, the documentary evidence to back up what is on the ground is naturally more bountiful. The other part of heritage that can often be overlooked, but which plays an enormous part in industrial heritage, is the word of those that were there - primarily, but not necessarily workers.

To this end, I have setup a new section on the site. Entitled "Reminiscences", I am inviting real life stories relating to any aspect of industrial heritage on the island of Ireland for inclusion on the site. I am fortunate to have received a wonderful short piece from Paul Dodson about living in the railway station house at Foynes in Co. Limerick and his narrative kicks off this section.

Paul's story can be read here.

shazzakataya.com

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

I came upon this site http://www.shazzakataya.com/ through a Google Alert using the search of "industrial heritage ireland". The blogger uses their blog to display photographs that they have taken, quite a few of which relate to the industrial heritage of Northern Ireland.

I have made contact with the person behind the blog and am happy to state that I have added deep links from this site to sections of their site, based on information provided by them.

To anyone else reading this blog, I am happy to feature and publicise your site and link to relevant sections of it, if what I am linking to relates to any aspect of the industrial heritage of the island of Ireland.

Dalkey Quarry and Atmospheric Railway

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

I have transferred this section of the site over to its new format. The link from the History page now goes directly to the new page (instead of via an index page for the Dalkey Quarry Tramway and Atmospheric Railway).

The photos are still viewed via the old html pages. These will eventually be moved into the Coppermine Photo Gallery.
