Herdmans Mill - Sion Mills

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

The BBC has reported that a building on the Herdman's Mill site in Sion Mills went on fire earlier today. Roisin Connolly of the Sion Mills Buildings Preservation Trust is quoted:

"The fire is focused on the front offices of the Mourne mill - the large industrial factories that were occupied between 1989 and 2004 when the last mill workers were paid off.

"It does not affect the old part of the mill which is B plus listed and is at the other end of the site.

"The building on fire is deserted at present, it is derelict."

If anyone has any photographs of the aftermath, I would be happy to add them to this site. Contact details here.

Bernd and Hilla Becher

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Fate saw me have a meeting with a lady called Rowena Neville of Business to Arts last week and we ended up having a conversation about industrial heritage. Out of this, Rowena brought the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher to my attention. From Wikipedia:

The Bechers first collaborated on photographing and documenting the disappearing German industrial architecture in 1959, and had their first Gallery exhibition in 1963 at the Galerie Ruth Nohl in Siegen. They were fascinated by the similar shapes in which certain buildings were designed. In addition, they were intrigued by the fact that so many of these industrial buildings seemed to have been built with a great deal of attention toward design. Together, the Bechers went out with a large format camera and photographed these buildings from a number of different angles, but always with a straightforward "objective" point of view. The images of structures with similar functions were then displayed side by side to invite viewers to compare their forms and designs. These structures included barns, water towers, storage silos, and warehouses.

Whilst obviously of a German nature, the photographs taken by the Bechers would be of interest to anyone with an interest in industrial heritage.

The Cut, Banbridge, Co. Down

Monday, October 4th, 2010

The Cut in Banbridge is probably the best known example on the island of Ireland of an early grade separation of roads. The lesser known example in Northern Ireland is The Dry Arch in Co. Antrim.

I have added Google Street View for The Cut, Banbridge to the relevant page in the IH Wiki.

With the launch of Google Street View in Ireland, I will, when I add each location to the IH Wiki, be adding a link under "Photographs" to the Street View record for that location, if appropriate. The first location that I have added this link to is Hazelhatch and Celbridge station in Dublin.
