Royal Canal - original route

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The original plans for the Royal Canal would have seen the canal heading towards Kinnegad. The historic OS maps online show the original route diverging from the canal east of the bridge at Hill of Down. Coincidentally, the railway occupies the site of the deviation and MP 35 from Broadstone is located at the point of divergence. See the map here.

Royal Canal at Collins Bridge, Lucan

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

I was looking at the historic 6" maps on the OSI website this evening and these show an interesting harbour like area to the east of Collins Bridge in Lucan. This area is where the now closed Lucan North railway station was built. The map can be accessed here.

Crown Estates’ right to collect mining fees

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

This link is to research carried out (not by me nor by anyone I know) which questions the legal basis of the Crown Estate to levy charges for gold and silver mining in the UK. This is of obvious relevance to Ireland due to the presence of a working gold mine in Northern Ireland.

Salthill House Hotel

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

Long since demolished, Salthill House was a building that the Dublin & Kingstown Railway were required to purchase in order to run their railway through the grounds of same. They subsequently let the building out as a hotel. I have added an image of the hotel from Measoms Guide to the site, which can be viewed here. Of this scene, the only feature remaining today are the two piers of the footbridge to the right of centre in the image.
