Snippet from the Illustrated London News July 1852 - Derena Leadmines near Spiddal

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

"Mr. Tyndell, of London, a member of an English Company, who have undertaken to work the leadmines of Derena, near Spiddal, in Galway, has arrived there wthin the last few days, for the purpose of commencing operations without delay. The mines in question are particularly rich, and the benefit accruing to both the company and the locality must consequently be very great."

Boyne Viaduct, Drogheda

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Anyone who has visited the town of Drogheda cannot fail to have seen the spectacular viaduct carrying the Dublin to Belfast railway line over the River Boyne there. I have added a page to the IH Wiki for the Boyne Viaduct.

Illustrated London News

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

I have started reading old copies of the Illustrated London News (in the Dublin City Council Library on Pearse Street) as a means of finding information relevant to the industrial heritage of Ireland. Completely unrelated, I came upon this piece of consumer protection legislation from 1852:

4th November 1852 - The Treasury order prohibiting the sale of chicory as coffee was effected.

Even back then, Yeats' merchants were fumbling in the greasy till.

The BBC has a video clip of the above lock which has been drained to allow for installation of new gates. British Waterways are allowing a public walkthrough this weekend in advance of the work taking place.

Burtonport Station

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

I have created a page in the IH Wiki for Burtonport Station in Co. Donegal. This is part of the wider project to create an online map of the former railways of Ireland. Working from North West to South East, the first map covers north Co. Donegal and the furthest west station is Burtonport.

Forth Rail Bridge - viewing platform proposed

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

The BBC has reported that Network Rail are examing the possibility of installing a public viewing platform on the iconic Forth Rail bridge in Scotland. As IH visitor experiences go, this would be up there with the best. Can we have something similar on the Barrow Bridge on the South Wexford line?
