Train collision - Maynooth, 1908

Monday, April 30th, 2012

This link is to the Co Kildare Online Electronic History Journal, which reprints a news report of 1908 into the above incident. I recall my accounting teacher from secondary school telling me that his grandfather was stationmaster in Maynooth at the time and after the incident, was posted to Achill, which he saw as a punishment posting arising from the accident.

Police State vs non Police State

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Just back from my holidays, which saw me spend 4 days in Britain and 7 days in Malta. For the uninitiated, it has become very difficult for those with an interest in industrial heritage to take photographs in Britain, due to its de facto status as a police state. The taking of photographs renders one subject to the Terrorism Acts. By contrast, in Malta, hassling of tourists is not something that appears to take place - the people are warm and friendly and the culture relaxed.

By way of comparison, over the four days in Britain, I took 9 photos. In Malta, over 7 days, I took 124 photos. I know which country I'd prefer to spend my money in.

Rathbornes Candles, Dublin.

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

IrishCentral.com has a write up about Rathbornes - the Dublin based candle maker which is here. Interestingly, the Sunday Independent also has an article on the same topic, I wonder which came first?

Explosives found in quarry

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Not quite as good as the visitor to a harbour in England who complained about the smell of fish but a close second! Makes you wonder, how did they think that quarry operators extracted the material being worked. By hand?
