Opencast in Arizona

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

As a follow on to the last post (albeit unrelated), I bring you a link to the BBC (what would I do without them!) - this time concerning a proposed open cast copper mine in Arizona, which has drawn the ire of environmentalists. The response of the company is to the effect that they have to dig where the copper is, which reminds me of a story about Drogheda train station.

A tourist to the town asked why they built the station so far out of town, to which he was told that they had to build it beside the railway line!

I call bullshit

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

This article on the BBC website blames pollution effects on mining. Maybe it has to do with the underlying mineral in the ground and therefore the way to stop the pollution would be to opencast it?

Fort Camden open days

Monday, June 25th, 2012

Fort Camden near Crosshaven in Co. Cork will be open between 1200 and 1700 on Saturdays and Sundays from 30th June to 16th September 2012. Whilst military installations per se are not industrial heritage, features within, such as tunnels, bridges, embankments and railways are. Fort Camden was also the location used for trialing the Brennan dirigible torpedo - an invention by Mayo man Louis Brennan. The initial guided stages of this system were rail based. The system was never used in anger, either at Fort Camden or at any other location it was installed.

End of the road for Londonderry Port & Harbour Commission?

Monday, June 25th, 2012

Reading this article on the BBC website, you would think that the Londonderry name was about to disappear from the Port and Harbour Commission, to be rebranded "Foyle Port". However, I can find nothing on the website of the Londonderry Port & Harbour Commission.

Utility covers of the world

Sunday, June 24th, 2012

A bit trainspotterish for my liking - however, if this sort of thing floats your boat - courtesy of the BBC, I link to Utility Covers of the World.

Going under the knife

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Nothing to do with IH - however, as last Monday 18th June, I celebrated the 20 year anniversary of life changing surgery, without which, it is unlikely I'd have the resources to maintain this site, I am linking to this feature on the BBC website.

I claim bragging rights

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

The BBC has reported that Google is to add canals in England and Wales to its mapping database.

Some time ago, I emailed John Martin, CEO of Waterways Ireland, to suggest that WI contact Google and suggest that they navigate the waterways under WI's control with their StreetView cameras.

Exide Batteries (Irl) Ltd - 1936 Fire

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

There is a plaque on the wall of the modern development at Trinity College that fronts onto Pearse Street in Dublin, which commemorates the death of 3 Dublin Firemen attending a blaze at the premises of Exide Batteries (Irl) Ltd on October 5th 1936. The story of the Exide Batteries (Irl) Ltd - 1936 Fire can be read here.

The presence of industrial heritage - in this case the location of a battery assembly plant - in the basement of a Pearse Street house, shows that IH can occur anywhere. That the building across the road from this site - the former Academy Cinema - also has an IH past as a plant for producing gas from fish oil, further highlights this reality.
