This local publication is a local history of an area of Newcastle, Co. Down, centred on the harbour area. Whilst most of the book is to do with social history, it does contain material about the harbour, the granite quarry and boat building in the area. There are numerous photos and a few Ordnance Survey maps in the book.
The book records that the granite quarry opened on Millstone Mountain in 1824. Pre 1830 there was a limestone quay and pier, however, these were not suitable for large schooners in use on the Irish Sea. A snw pier or North Quay was built in late 1820s from the local granite. It was damaged in 1838 by a storm and not fully repaired until 1847. The Southern Quay was extended in 1905.
