This book is the company history of the Midland Great Western Railway, the third largest railway company to have operated on the island of Ireland prior to the 1925 amalgamation. The MGWR ran from its headquarters at Broadstone in Dublin to Galway, Westport, Ballina and Sligo. Branches ran to Kingscourt, Edenderry, Cavan town, Clara, Ballaghadereen, Loughrea, Clifden, Ballinrobe, Achill (Sound) and Killala.
As with the other large railway companies, the lines in the company's ownership were a combination of those built by it and others taken over after falling on hard times. The book sets out the history behind the development of the network, sandwiched between the GS&WR to the south and the GNR(I) to the north, both of which actively opposed encroachment onto 'their' territory.
Most of the route of the line as far as Mullingar was obtained by the expedient act of buying the Royal Canal, hence bringing the history of this into the remit of the book, although it is limited to brief references and a short chapter on boat services.
Chapters on services, accidents, locomotives, rolling stock, personnel, hotel & catering services and one on the course of the line complete the work.
Days Hotel Belfast - located in a lovely area of Belfast where the Union Jack flies from every lamppost and the kerbstones are painted blue white and red.
