I remain of the view that once a greenway, never a railway, in relation to the conversion of closed railway lines to greenways. As such I am concerned by the recent about turn by Irish Rail in relation to a greenway on the Burma Road (the closed railway from Claremorris to Collooney). What concerns me further are comments from Irish Rail that the issue is “out of their hands”.
Hang on a moment, every time someone raises a suggestion that the Government force (insert name of State body) to do something, where the Government (temporary or permanent) doesn’t want to do that thing, they use the weasel worded response to the effect of “(Insert thing) is an operational matter for (insert name of State body).
However, here we have the CEO of a commercial State body implying that the Government can actually order Government owned organisations to do things against their will? This could be a very dangerous precedent.
