Garrienderk bridge, Limerick

The Limerick Leader has an article in relation to Michael Collins (of Civil War fame) and how he was photographed near the townland of Garrienderk in Limerick, whilst inspecting damage done to the railway bridge there. This was some 2 days before he was murdered,

Locals have arranged to have a plaque commemorating the event created – where this plaque will be erected is not clear as it is quite substantial in size relative to the abutments of the overbridge.

Share certificates

No, I’m not selling shares or looking for money (I develop and maintain this site as a labour of love).

Many years ago, I purchased half a dozen cancelled share certificates of old Irish companies (5 railway and 1 mining) and I have added a section to the site to display these, which can be found here.

I have also made a few small administrative changes, such as automating the copyright date at the foot of each page, which I have updated a few pages with and will be rolling out to all pages as time progresses.

The IH Venues page has also had a refresh, with the links to such locations now in 2 columns, giving a better look. I took the opportunity to check all links were valid and removed a couple that are no longer present.

Consultation to rename Royal Canal bridge in Dublin

The Commemorations and Naming Committee of Dublin City Council have proposed that the bridge over the Royal Canal on Russell Street in Dublin be named “Bloody Sunday Bridge”, in recognition of the events that took place in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday, 1920.

Regulations require that a public consultation on this take place beforehand – this can be accessed at this link.

Lighthouses in the Civil War

RTE have an interesting article on their site about raids on Irish lighthouses during the Civil War. As a subject that doesn’t immediately spring to mind, they are to be commended for giving this research an audience.
